What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, or piece of equipment that is commonly used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Assistive technology is specific to the student with a disability. Some common examples are:
- AAC devices (Alternate and Augmentative Communication)
- Speech generating devices or programs
- Text to speech programs
- Digital textbooks
- Keyboards or portable word processors for writing
- Switches and environmental controls
- Picture Communication Systems
- Modified text for blind or low vision students
- Digital scheduling or task management
